Accounting & tax

Your profit and loss, your VAT position, and your payroll — from the records you already keep.

Most small businesses in Tanzania find out what they earned months after they earned it, when an accountant has finished sorting through a bag of receipts. ZIAPP already holds every sale and every expense, so the profit and loss is a page rather than a project — revenue, cost of goods, gross profit, what you spent running the place, and what is left.

It tells you what it does not know. If no expenses were recorded in a month, it says the profit is overstated rather than quietly reporting a flattering figure. Management accounts are only as honest as what went into them, and pretending otherwise is how an owner makes a decision on a number that was never true.

VAT and payroll follow from the same records. If you are VAT registered it works out what you collected, what you were charged, and what is owed; if you are not, it says so and explains the threshold instead of inventing a liability. Payroll computes PAYE, NSSF, SDL and WCF at the rates in force and posts the cost to your books when you finalise the month.

What it does

  • Profit and loss for any month, with expenses broken down by category
  • VAT return figures — output, input and the net position
  • Payroll with PAYE bands, NSSF, SDL and WCF worked out per employee
  • Payslip figures locked once a month is finalised, at the rates that applied then
  • A short list of what is due, to whom, and by when

What it does not do

  • These are management accounts from your own records, not audited financial statements.
  • ZIAPP does not file anything with TRA, NSSF or WCF, and does not pay anybody. It gives you the figures and the dates.
  • Payroll is visible to the owner and the accountant only — not to managers.
  • A business with a non-calendar accounting year or an instalment arrangement will have obligations beyond what is listed.
